Governor Christie Gives Mixed Signals on New Jersey Online Gaming Bill

In a recent radio appearance, Governor Chris Christie refused to indicate his support, or lack thereof, for an online gaming bill that recently passed both the New Jersey Assembly and New Jersey Senate.  The bill would allow Atlantic City casinos to offer online casino games, not just online poker, to be played for money in the State of New Jersey.

During the appearance, Governor Christie seemingly questioned the extent to which the bill would have a positive impact on New Jersey’s economy and raised the specter that it might create a new class of problem gamblers.  In addition, there is speculation that Governor Christie is mindful of the effects passing the bill could have on his national political aspirations, as legalized gambling remains deeply unpopular with large majorities of the Republican base.

Governor Christie’s decision will be of significant interest to gaming attorneys and those that follow developments in Internet poker law in general.
